Mosquito bites and sunburn: How to keep your skin healthy through the summer

Summer invites us to go on excursions, hikes, bike rides, and relaxing days in nature. But this also brings with it some typical companions: mosquito bites, sunburn, or minor bruises are almost part and parcel of a day outdoors for many.

That's why it's always good to have arnica in your home medicine cabinet for such everyday situations.

What are typical skin problems in summer?

In summer, we spend more time outdoors, which means our skin is more frequently exposed to external factors. Among the most common complaints are mosquito and insect bites, mild sunburn, or bruises from twisting an ankle.

Why cooling can be beneficial

After prolonged exposure to the sun or insect bites, many people find cooling applications pleasant.

Even after physical exertion or minor bruises, a cooling gel often provides a refreshing feeling on the skin.

Especially in summer, it's therefore advisable to keep such products in the refrigerator. The additional coolness is perceived by many as particularly soothing.

Arnica: A Medicinal Plant with a Long Tradition

Arnica (Arnica montana) is one of the best-known medicinal plants in Europe. It grows primarily in mountain meadows and prefers unfertilized, nutrient-poor soils, where it blooms in early summer. It is considered a universal remedy, as it has proven effective in many areas. In Austria, Arnica montana, also known as mountain arnica, is native to the high Alps.

Its powerful healing properties made this medicinal plant so famous that it was harvested extensively in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, arnica is a protected species in Austria and Germany. We source it for our production from collection areas mainly in Romania, where harvesting is legally permitted.

When is arnica traditionally used?

Arnica has been used externally for centuries and continues to find diverse applications today, for example, for:

  • Bruises
  • Insect bites
  • Sun-damaged skin

Gels are particularly popular in summer because they are pleasantly cooling and absorb quickly into the skin.

Conclusion

Summer brings many wonderful moments outdoors, but minor skin irritations and discomfort are also common. Mosquito bites, sunburn, and bruises are not always avoidable.

A well-stocked home medicine cabinet with cooling care products and proven herbal ingredients like arnica can therefore be a practical companion, especially during the warmer months.
