The Melissa plant is native to southern Europe, but has now established itself here in Austria. In the Middle Ages its cultivation was ordered by decree in every monastic garden, as it was considered indispensable and very valuable even then.
When it is ground it releases a gentle lemony scent, which is why it is often called lemon balm. Once it has become established in a garden it flourishes year after year, and can be used for herbal tea and in a wide range of medicines.
